Obsessions

In case you hadn't noticed, I cook a little compulsively. Get 7 pounds of oatmeal? Scour for granola and oatmeal recipes, and make every one I find.

The latest compulsion? Smoothies. Gaby hates breakfast these days, but she loves milkshakes...so we're going to try smoothies. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm going to look for recipes today, and start making them tomorrow.

My other obsession? Quiche. I haven't had any lately, I just really want some. I've got two pie crusts in the freezer...anyone have a favorite quiche recipe to share?

This my most important smoothie rule. Freeze your fruit, and don't use ice.

This way, you get the thick, smooth texture, and it doesn't get diluted by ice chunks. And it's easier on your blender than crushing ice.

You and I must be on the same wavelength. I just got back from the store and am getting ready to freeze bananas and strawberries. So no ice?

I'm thinking of using yogurt (I've got vanilla, banana and strawberry), fruit, milk and maybe a little honey to sweeten (not much).

(Sorry about the double comments. Oops.)

I learned the frozen fruit/no ice thing from a smoothie cookbook, and I really like it that way. I'm sure it's a personal preference thing, though. I usually just throw in whatever I happen to have around. Yogurt is probably best, but I have also used sorbet. I like lemon sorbet with raspberries, and a little bit of lemonade- very good in the summer. Probably too dessert-y for breakfast, though.

Geoff and I make smoothies sometimes. Usually, we just pick up some frozen fruit at the grocery store, and throw it in the blender. We use milk and bananas to thicken it up a bit.

The yogurt worked pretty well this morning. I used one frozen banana, some banana/vanilla Stoneybrook yogurt, a squirt of honey and some 2% milk. Oh, and just about 1/4 cup of crushed ice, to make it icy for Gaby. She loved it, Ernie and I both thought it was pretty good, too.
Just happy to get a little extra protein and fruit in Gaby, since she's so tiny. With summer coming, she's even more active than usual and has lost a pound, I think.

OK, so you guys are probably done talking about smoothies, and I don't make my own, but...

There's a Jamba Juice near my apartment that I frequent. "Frequent" is a bit of an understatement, actually. The smoothie I get there is made with orange juice, frozen yogurt (vanilla? do they make plain frozen yogurt?), frozen bananas, frozen strawberries and sometimes a scoop of crushed ice, depending on who's working that day. It's so, so good.

But.

Could be because I've had it a squillion times, but it's stopped tasting like fruit. Yeah, sometimes there's a lot of yogurt in it, but everything else in it IS fruit.

I've had a similar smoothie at Smoothie King. It forgoes the yogurt in favor of honey and turbinado (sugar?). And maybe something else. I haven't had it as much, so I haven't studied its composition. But it's WAY frutier and less meal-like. But it's also less thick. Feels more like I'm drinking something that's good for me than something that's tasty.

Anyway, yes to frozen fruit. Yes to yogurt (in moderation), sherbert, sorbet and fruit juice. Yes to smoothies in general.
